Spotting it
Look from the hatch without climbing in. Granules lying loose between the joists are a reason to stay out and call for a sample.

Vermiculite is a loose attic fill of small pebbles in light brown, gray or gold, and MDH names Zonolite as one brand. Left undisturbed, it can stay where it is, MDH says. Once work will disturb it, MDH advises calling a licensed contractor to take it out.
We clear vermiculite from attics in Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center and Crystal ahead of insulation, wiring or ceiling work.

Fill that stays undisturbed can be left in place, and MDH supports that. Keep storage and foot traffic out of the attic in the meantime.
Removal day starts with containment. We tape off the hatch, put plastic over the ceilings below and switch on negative air, and the fill is scooped into labeled bags that get sealed. Clearance air sampling ends the job.
Once the joists are clean, the steps below come next.
Your insulation contractor can seal gaps around lights, pipes and the hatch, then add new insulation with nothing old in the way.
The ceiling under the attic, plaster or texture, counts as a separate material. If wiring or new lights will cut into it, get it sampled too.

Spotted taped or wrapped ductwork beside the fill? That is handled under duct, furnace and pipe insulation removal, and the home page lists every other service.
