Asbestos Removal in Brooklyn Center

More than 6 in 10 Brooklyn Center homes date from the 1950s and 1960s. If you are about to remove a wall, lift old flooring or change out a furnace in one, we can arrange testing, take out what tests positive and file the state notice.

Citywide, the median home was built in 1962, and the share built before 1980 is more than 8 in every 10.

Asbestos removal services

Sampling first

Every job starts with a lab result. Our asbestos testing page explains what gets sampled for a remodel and for a teardown.

Kitchen, laundry and basement floors

In a 1950s kitchen or laundry room, the floor you see may cover an older one. A lab test on each layer shows which ones come up under floor tile and sheet vinyl removal.

Textured ceilings

Planning a new light or an open floor plan? The ceiling texture gets sampled first, and our popcorn ceiling removal page explains the work if it tests positive.

Attic fill

Granular fill between attic joists can be vermiculite. Have it identified before new insulation buries it, and read vermiculite attic insulation removal for how we handle it.

Brooklyn Center homes

The 1950s are the city’s biggest building decade, with more than a third of today’s homes, and the 1960s built about a quarter. Only about 1 in 15 homes is older than 1950.

Mid-century materials

A 1950s or 1960s house may still have floor tile and adhesive, ceiling texture, joint compound or wrap on its ducts and pipes, and MDH puts each of those on its list. We quote from lab results rather than from the build year.

Rentals and apartments

More than a third of occupied homes are rented, and one-unit homes make up about two thirds of the housing. Landlords need a licensed contractor for regulated work, because the owner-occupant exemption in state law does not reach rental property.

Permits in Brooklyn Center

The city’s building and construction permits page covers online permits, inspections and refunds, with nothing on asbestos or demolition. Check with the city about your permit before scheduling a teardown, and plan around the state rules either way.

Hennepin County

Brooklyn Center is a Hennepin County city, so a teardown here gets a county inspection, whether the building is a home or a commercial property. We hand over the abatement receipts and disposal manifests for that visit, and the county will also want the asbestos survey and its report on file.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licensed contractor in Brooklyn Center?

Yes. Friable pipe insulation puts the job in licensed hands when there is more than 10 linear feet of it, and other friable material does when there is more than 6 square feet. Only where neither can be measured does the limit become more than 1 cubic foot of friable material. The single exemption is for a person who owns and lives in the single-family house, though MDH still strongly recommends a licensed contractor for that owner.

Is a little asbestos safe to remove?

Not necessarily. Below the state limits the work is not regulated by MDH, but the agency says unregulated is not the same as safe.

Can removal start the day after testing?

Not for regulated work. The contractor has to get its notice to MDH at least five calendar days before starting, which puts a short wait into the schedule.

Does a house teardown need an MPCA notice?

Only in some cases. For a commercial building or anything with five or more units, we notify MPCA and the crew starts ten working days later. A house with four units or fewer needs no notice. It does need one if it was converted from another use, if one owner is tearing down several houses, or if the demolition is part of an urban renewal, highway or commercial development project. We fit that wait into your schedule.
